JOHNSON CITY, TENN. -- With the score knotted at 3-all, Juan Hugo outlasted freshman Emil Westling, 6-0, 6-7(5), 7-5, at flight four as East Tennessee State slipped past Furman, 4-3, Friday at the Dave Mullins Tennis Complex in Johnson City, Tenn.
The Bucs swept the doubles matches to take the first point. Frazier Rengifo and Juan Lugo beat seniors Jake Bhangdia and Henrik Atlevi, 6-1, in the top-seeded contest, and Thiago Pernas and Juan Sebastian Zabala topped senior Ivan Mitric and freshman Ben Cahill, 6-4, at flight two. At number three, Dimitri Badra and Miguel Este recorded a 6-1 advantage over senior Drew Singerman and freshman Emil Westling.Â
ETSU (5-6, 3-0 SoCon) took a 3-0 lead after Zabala defeated Singerman, 6-4, 6-3, at flight five, and Este beat James Roelofse, 7-5, 6-3, at number six. The Paladins rallied with three consecutive singles wins to tie the score at 3-apiece, setting up the decisive flight four contest. Bhangdia held off Rengifo, 6-7, 6-0, 6-2, at flight two, to put the Paladins on the board, and Mitric topped 72nd-ranked Dimitri Badra, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, at flight one. At flight three, Atlevi outlasted Pernas, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4.
Furman (5-10, 2-1 SoCon) will play at Chattanooga Sunday at noon.
