GREENVILLE, S.C. --
Keller Harper registered a pair of late birdies to post a two-under par 69 on Saturday and maintain his hold atop the leader board while helping Furman remain in first place after two rounds of the 51st Annual Furman Intercollegiate at the par 71, 6,984-yard Furman University Golf Course.
Harper, the tournament's reigning champion who registered a 66 on Friday, carded three birdies through his first seven holes to get to eight under before bogeys on No. 9, 10, 12, and 14 contributed to his slide back to level par. Â The senior from Atlanta, Ga., got back into red numbers with a birdie at the 525-yard, par five 15th and closed his round by birdieing the 459-yard, par four 17th and making par at 18.
Harper's two-round, seven-under par total of 135 leads teammate
Walker Crosby by two shots.Â
Playing as an individual, Crosby, a sophomore from Memphis, Tenn., followed up Friday's opening round 70 with the second best round of the day, filling his scorecard with seven birdies, including four on the back nine, for a 67 and two-round, five-under par total of 137.
Three shots off the lead in third place at 138 is Wofford's Matthew Copeland, who fired a tournament low, six-under par 65 on Saturday to help the Terriers register a three-under par total of 281.
Two players from Florida Gulf Coast, Jon Hopkins and Brady Madsen, are tied for fourth at one-under par 141.
In the clubhouse, Wofford held a two shot lead over Furman when afternoon thunderstorms halted play for one hour and 14 minutes. Â Following the resumption of action, Harper's birdies at No. 15 and 17 drew the Paladins even, and Furman gained two more shots and the lead when freshman
Mac Scott holed out an 87-yard wedge shot for an eagle on No. 18, a 403-yard par four.
Joining Harper in the Paladins' top four were
Jack Crosby with a 70, Scott with a 71, and
Ross Funderburke, who carded a 73. Â
Reynolds Lambert shot 74.
Furman's two-round tally of 566 leads Wofford's 568. Â Florida Gulf Coast, which shot 282, is in third place, six shots off the pace at 572, and Chattanooga is fourth at 575, nine shots back, after matching Wofford's low round of 281 on Saturday.
George Mason's Colin Slater, who shot 66 on Friday to share the first round lead with Harper, slid to a 77 and two-round total of 143, putting him in a tie for ninth with seven others.
Other Paladins are competing as individuals include
Sam Lape (72-72=144/T16th),
Nathan Norfleet (76-73=149/T45th),
