BUIES CREEK, N.C. -- Sophomores Meagan Beal and Hannah Dintino combined for eight goals to lead Furman past Campbell, 15-14, Saturday in Buies Creek, N.C. The win moves Furman to 5-3 on the year, while the loss drops the Camels to 3-5.
Beal and Dintino each recorded four goals in the win to pace the Paladins, while senior Kyra LaMotte, freshman Sophie Shaw, and freshman Sydney McClure each added two goals apiece. Senior Hannah Demis led Furman with four assists in the victory. Sophomore Meghan Deehan registered eight saves to record her fifth win of the season, and freshman Avery McIlwaine tallied five draws in the contest.
The game featured nine ties, as the Paladins jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a goal from Demis to Beal, but the Camels answered with two goals to take the advantage. Dintino answered with an unassisted goal to tie the game at 21:28, but again Campbell scored to take the lead. Furman jumped ahead, 4-3, off back to back goals from LaMotte and Dintino, then the Camels scored at the 13:40 and 12:40 marks to lead, 5-4.
Again the Paladins put together consecutive goals from Demis and LaMotte, taking a 6-5 advantage with ten minutes to go until the half. Campbell scored three goals in just over a minute to go up by two, but the Paladins kept the game in reach with another score from Dintino to cut the deficit to 8-7 at halftime.
The Paladins rallied with three goals to open the half, building a 10-8 advantage of goals from McClure, Beal, and Dintino. After the Camels scored twice to tie the game, Furman's Shaw and Beal each scored to regain the momentum, 12-10. The teams were tied for a third time in the second half off two goals from Campbell, then the Paladins took the lead for good after Shaw and McClure scored to give Furman a 14-12 lead.
Campbell came within one off a free position shot by Alexis McDaniel, but Beal scored off an assist by Demis for an insurance goal that proved to be the difference after the Camels scored a final time with just 41 seconds remaining.
The Camels were led by Lizzie Yurchak, who scored five goals and added two assists, while Megan Matthews tallied three goals. Alex Salim notched 10 saves in the loss, and Julianna Sanchez had a game-high 12 draws.
The Paladins are back in action on Saturday, hosting Coastal Carolina inside Paladin Stadium for a 3 p.m. match up.
