Paladins Win Furman Intercollegiate, Harper Defends Individual Title

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Keller Harper fired a final round 72 on Sunday to win the individual championship and help Furman claim the team title of the 51st Annual Furman Intercollegiate at the par 71, 6,984-yard Furman University Golf Course.

Harper's three round, six-under par total of 207 earned him a three-shot victory over Jon Hopkins of Florida Gulf Coast, who carded a 69 on Sunday to finish at three-under par 210.  Wofford's Ryan Marter's 66, the low round of the day, earned him third place along with Chattanooga's Alex Cobb, whose final round 68 gave him a three-day, two-under part total of 211. Furman's Walker Crosby, playing as an individual, and Florida Gulf Coast's Brady Madsen finished five shots back at 212 to share fifth place.

Furman edged Florida Gulf Coast by two strokes to win the team championship with a one-over par, three-round total of 853.  The crown was the first by the Paladins in their own tournament since 2004 and third in Furman Intercollegiate history.

The Paladins entered Sunday with a two-shot lead over Wofford and used a final round, four-over par 287 to hold off Florida Gulf Coast, which registered a one-under par 283 on Sunday.  Chattanooga fired the day's best round, a two-under par 282, to claim third place, four shots off the pace, and Wofford finished fourth, seven shots back at 860 following a 292 on Sunday.  Charleston Southern rounded out the top five with a three-round total of 869.

Seventeen teams competed in the tournament.

"It was exciting to win, though it definitely got interesting there late," said Furman head coach Matt Davidson, who claimed the Furman Intercollegiate crown in 2004 while leading the Paladins to the team title that year.  "Keller played great.  It's always exciting to witness one of those (championships), because it's hard to win a tournament.  We hadn't won this one in a long time, so it's special."

Harper, the tournament's defending champion from 2019, is the 10th Paladin to claim the title and only the second Furman player to win it twice, joining Todd White (1989 & '90).  It was his second win of the spring after collecting medalist honors at the Pinnacle Bank Intercollegiate (Feb 22-23) at Hilton Head and fourth career triumph for the two-time reigning Southern Conference Player of the Year.

The Atlanta, Ga., native opened Sunday's round with birdies at holes No. 1 & 2 but fell back to level par with a double-bogey on the par-four, 400-yard seventh, which preceded a one-hour and 50 minute rain delay.  Following bogeys at No. 12 and 13, he birdied No. 15 for the third straight round to get to one over par.

Ross Funderburke's two-under par 69 led Furman on Sunday and earned him a tie for seventh place with teammate Mac Scott, who carded a 72. Jack Crosby (74-70-75=219) finished in a tie for 26th, and Reynolds Lambert (75-74-74=223) placed 53rd.
