Furman Cruises to 18-6 Win over Gardner-Webb

Demis Finishes with Career-High Eight Point, LaMotte Adds Five Goals

Greenville, S.C. – Kyra LaMotte scored a game-high five goals, while Hannah Demis set a new career-high with eight points, to lead the Furman women's lacrosse team to an 18-6 non-conference victory over the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs Thursday evening from Paladin Stadium.

Furman, who has now won four straight over Gardner-Webb, improves to 2-2 on the season while the Runnin' Bulldogs fall to 2-2 overall.

Demis recorded a career-best eight points Thursday on two goals and six assists. Her six assists are tied for second-most in a game in program history and her eight points are tied for third-most. LaMotte also had a team-high five ground balls (tied career-high) to go with her five goals. Lauren Farber scored a career-high four goals while Lindsey Kelly and Sydney Catts both had two. Avery Whitehead led the team with four draws and had two caused turnovers along with Avery McIlwaine and Ellie Roser.

In goal, Meghan Deehan picked up the win recording four saves and allowing the fewest goals in a game for her career.

Talen Francis scored a team-high two goals for Gardner-Webb, while Jada Preston, Lauren Deaver and Jessica Vetter all had one. Deaver contributed one assist. Maddie Martin won four draws, Kathleen Mackey picked up four ground balls and Heather Lobas caused three turnovers.

LaMotte and Demis combined for the first two goals of the game as the Paladins opened on an 8-0 run over the initial 13 minutes. Furman also scored four free position goals during that stretch from Catts, Farber, Sydney McClure and Hannah Dintino. Farber's free-position goal, her second goal in less than a minute, gave the Paladins the eight-goal advantage.

After the Runnin' Bulldogs scored back-to-back goals from Preston and Francis, Furman went on a 4-0 run that covered a stretch of 15:20. LaMotte picked up two of the goals while Farber and Kelly provided one apiece. Kelly's goal with 5:02 remaining gave the Paladins a 12-2 lead. Deaver and Francis scored in the final minute of play for Gardner-Webb to cut Furman's halftime lead to 12-4.

The Paladins began the second half with three straight goals over the first 11 minutes from Farber, Catts and Meagan Beal to increase their lead out to 15-4 with 9:56 to go. Following a Runnin' Bulldog goal just over two minutes later, Demis and LaMotte teamed up for three consecutive goals. Demis registered both of her goals with the last coming at the 6:18 mark, putting Furman in front 18-5. Gardner-Webb got a goal with 4:29 left in the game to make the final score 18-6.

The Paladins concluded the contest holding a 33-17 advantage in shots and 23-14 in ground balls, while winning 12 draws and forcing the Runnin' Bulldogs into 18 turnovers.

Furman begins a two-game road trip next Thursday, April 11, traveling to VCU for a 4 p.m. contest.
