Charlotte, N.C. – The Furman softball team opened a three-game series with the Charlotte 49ers on Saturday afternoon dropping both games of a doubleheader from Sue M. Daughtridge Stadium.
The Paladins fall to 2-7 on the season while the 49ers improve to 10-5 overall.
Charlotte won the opening game 4-1 and followed with a 3-1 victory in game two.
Game 1 – Furman 1, Charlotte 4
Kaitlyn Laudick went 2-for-3 for Furman, while
Emily Bartlett had a 1-for-3 performance with one RBI and one run scored.
Claire Ginder,
Riley Ludlam and
Mackense Greico each collected one hit.
Lindsey Walljasper and Logan Wood both had one RBI for the 49ers. Bailey Vannoy recorded one hit and scored twice.
Sierra Tufts (1-2) took the loss in the opener throwing six innings and surrendered four runs (one earned) on five hits, two walks and four strikeouts.
Walljasper (6-2) earned the win in the circle throwing a complete game and gave up one run on six hits, three walks and seven strikeouts.
Charlotte scored twice in the bottom of the first to take an early 2-0 lead. Spenser Gray had the game's first run, scoring on a passed ball, and Vannoy later scored when Wood reached on a Paladin throwing error.
Bartlett cut Furman's deficit down to 2-1 in the top of sixth on her solo home run to left center field.
The 49ers responded with a pair of runs in their half of the sixth to extend the lead out to 4-1. Walljasper got the scoring started with her one-out RBI single and Wood followed the next at-bat with an RBI single to right field.
Game 2 – Furman 1, Charlotte 3
Bartlett added three more hits in game two for the Paladins while
Chloe Fabio went 2-for-3 with one RBI. Laudick and Ludlam each provided one hit.
Gray and Kiyah Garrett each recorded two hits to lead Charlotte offensively. Garrett drove in all three runs.
Bailey Tanner (1-3) suffered the loss giving up three runs on five hits, two walks and no strikeouts in five innings of work. Greico threw one scoreless inning of relief and had one strikeout.
Mitchell (1-1) also collected the win in the circle, pitching 5.2 innings and allowed one run (none earned) on five hits, five walks and six strikeouts. Walljasper picked up the save throwing one scoreless inning on two hits, no walks and two strikeouts.
Garrett got the 49ers on the board with a single run in the first inning to go ahead 1-0 on her RBI single to center field. She later provided a two-out two-RBI single in the bottom of the fifth to put Charlotte ahead 3-0.
Furman added a run in the top of the sixth, to trail 3-1, after Fabio's RBI double to right center field scored
Natalie Morgan from first base. Morgan reached on a walk the previous at-bat.
