ORLANDO, FLA. -- Senior Katarina Kozarov recorded her 80th dual match singles win Monday, becoming the Paladin program leader for career victories, as No. 24 Furman topped USF, 6-1, at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts in Tampa, Fla. The previous record of 79 was set in Megan Dunigan in 2002.
A native of Novi Sad, Serbia, Kozarov, the 2020 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division I Most Improved Senior and the ITA Carolina Region Most Improved Senior, became just the second All-American in Paladin women's tennis history last season. The two-time defending SoCon Player of the Year, she sports a 12-1 singles record this season and is currently ranked 15th nationally. Kozarov also leads the Paladin program in combined singles and doubles wins at 147.
The Paladins won two out of three doubles contests to take the first point. Junior Madison Dillon and senior MaryAnn Rompf blew past Grace Schumacher and Margriet Timmermans, 6-2, at flight two, and sophomore Maggie Pate and freshman Ellie Schoppe downed Grace Eland and Laura Pellicer, 6-2, at number three. The flight one match was unfinished, with Kozarov and junior Julia Adams, who rank 27th nationally, leading Amelie Boy and Evelyne Tiron, 5-2.
Furman won five out of six singles matches, including four in straight sets. Kozarov beat Pellicer, 6-2, 6-2, at flight one, and Adams outlasted Boy, 6-2, 7-6(5), at number two. At flight three, Dillon hung on to defeat Schumacher, 6-4, 3-6, 1-0(6), while Rompf topped Alexandria Mjos, 6-3, 6-2, at flight four. At number six, Schoppe recorded a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Timmermans.
The Bulls (5-6) won at flight five, where Tiron defeated Page, 7-6(1), 7-5.
Furman (10-6, 1-0 SoCon) concludes its road trip at North Florida Wednesday at 10 a.m. The Paladins have won nine out of their last eleven matches, including scoring victories over Alabama, 16th-ranked Wake Forest, No. 18 South Carolina, and Virginia Tech.
