Columbia, S.C. – Jordan Fabian homered in both games to power South Carolina to a 9-1, 4-1 doubleheader sweep of Furman in non-conference softball action Wednesday afternoon at Carolina Softball Stadium in Columbia, S.C.
Game 1: South Carolina 9, Furman 1 (6 inn.)
Jordan Fabian belted a three-run homer to key a four-run first inning for the Gamecocks as they cruised to a 9-1 victory over Furman in game one.
Cayla Drotar (3-4) held the Paladins to just a run on four hits over six innings while fanning four batters and walking one to earn the victory for South Carolina. Mackensie Boesel went 3-for-4 at the plate with a pair of runs and Chooch Carroll delivered a two-run, pinch-hit double to end the game by mercy rule in the sixth inning.
Shelby Basso (3-8) suffered the loss for Furman after allowing five earned runs, six total, on five hits over three-plus innings of work.
Amanda Fleming provided the Paladins' lone run with her third homer of the season. Sophomore
Riley Ludlam added a double for Furman.
Game 2: South Carolina 4, Furman 1
Kenzi Maguire went 3-for-4 at the plate and Jordan Fabian homered for the second straight game to help South Carolina edge Furman, 4-1, in the nightcap.
Trailing 1-0 in the top of the fifth inning, Furman pulled even when
Natalie Morgan doubled, moved to third base on a wild pitch and scampered home on
Hana Hashioka's RBI single to left field.
Marina Griffin's sacrifice put two Paladins in scoring position with one out, but South Carolina reliever Leah Powell wiggled out of trouble when
Becca Crawford was thrown out at the plate and
Chloe Fabio struck out.
The Gamecocks (22-15) regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth by taking advantage of a Paladin error and upped their lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the sixth on a leadoff homer by Fabian and a two-out, RBI single from Maguire.
Powell earned the victory to improve to 6-2 in the circle by working three scoreless innings. She allowed just one hit and struck out two batters.
Freshman
Sierra Tufts (5-9) allowed four runs on seven hits over five-plus innings to absorb the loss for the Paladins.
Furman (10-20, 3-3 SoCon) will travel to Johnson City, Tenn., for a three-game series versus ETSU this coming weekend. The Paladins return home to host Charleston Southern in a doubleheader at Pepsi Stadium on April 20, before visiting N.C. State for a midweek double dip on April 21.
