Spartanburg, S.C. – The Furman women's lacrosse team registered a season-high 21 goals on Wednesday afternoon, and won its seventh consecutive game, following a 21-13 victory over the Wofford Terriers in SoCon play at Gibbs Stadium.
Furman improves to 10-3 on the season and 3-0 in conference play, while Wofford drops to 2-8 overall and 1-3 in the league. The seven straight wins is a new program record, surpassing the previous mark of six set back in 2017.
The 21 goals scored by the Paladins are tied for second-most in a game in program history, equaling the amount compiled on March 23, 2017 in a 21-5 road win at Gardner-Webb.
Hannah Demis led Furman offensively with six points on a game-high five assists and one goal.
Kyra LaMotte and
Meagan Beal scored a game-high four goals, and
Sophie Shaw (career-high) and
Sydney McClure contributed three each.
Hannah Dintino and
Avery McIlwaine recorded two goals, while
Sydney Catts and
Lindsey Kelly provided one apiece. Dintino, McIlwaine, Beal, Catts and Kelly all dished out one assist. Beal finished with a career-high six ground balls and McIlwaine won five draws.
Rachel Sindler tied her career-high of three caused turnovers.
In goal,
Meghan Deehan earned the win after making eight saves and grabbed two ground balls.
Demis became the program's single-season assist leader in the victory, currently sitting at 41 on the year. She breaks her own school record of 37 set back during the 2019 season.
Leah Hurley, Ally Furnari and Elisabeth Ralph all scored three goals to lead the Terriers. Furnari posted a team-leading five points and seven draws, and Hurley added four points. Ralph collected five ground balls while Tori Saylor caused a game-high four turnovers.
In goal, Kelsey Thompson made five saves and Aislinn Washburn had two.
Wofford closed out the final 7:12 of the first half on a 3-1 run and went from trailing 10-4 to being down 11-7 at halftime. The Terriers scored less than a minute into the second half and cut the Paladins' lead down to 11-8.
Furman responded by scoring six consecutive goals over the next seven minutes, highlighted by two apiece from Beal and LaMotte, to hold a 20-10 advantage. Kelly's goal with 12:55 remaining gave the Paladins a 10-goal lead. McClure scored Furman's final goal of the game at the 5:46 mark to make the score 21-12.
The Paladins opened the game scoring eight of the first 10 goals, covering a stretch of 15:20, and led 8-2 on LaMotte's goal with 14:40 to go. Demis later gave Furman a 10-4 lead after scoring with 8:11 left.
The Paladins attempted a total of 43 shots in the contest, third-most in a game in school history, while Wofford took 24. Furman also held a 21-14 advantage in ground balls and 20-16 in draws.
The Paladins close out their SoCon schedule on Saturday morning, traveling to Delaware State for a 10 a.m. opening draw.
