Dover, Del. – For the second time in program history, the Furman women's lacrosse team has won the SoCon Regular Season Championship following a 20-4 victory over the Delaware State Hornets in its conference finale Saturday morning at Alumni Stadium.
Furman, improving its school-record winning streak to eight consecutive games, moves to 11-3 overall and 4-0 in the SoCon. Delaware State drops to 1-9 on the season and 0-3 in conference play.
The Paladins last won the SoCon Regular Season Championship in 2019, but shared the crown with Mercer and Detroit Mercy. This marks the first time in program history that Furman has won an outright regular season championship.
Nine different Paladins scored in the contest led by
Kyra LaMotte, who tied her career-highs of six points and six goals.
Hannah Demis tied LaMotte's game-high six points on five assists and one goal.
Meagan Beal and
Sophie Shaw both had hat tricks, while
Sydney McClure tallied four points on two goals and two assists.
Alana Epstein contributed two goals, and
Hannah Dintino,
Avery McIlwaine and
Libby Bowen all scored once.
Lindsey Kelly provided two assists, and Dintino, McIlwaine and
Sydney Catts each dished out one.
In goal,
Meghan Deehan had two saves to pick up her eighth straight win.
With her six goals on Saturday, LaMotte becomes the program's single-season leader with 51. She surpasses the previous record of 50 set by
Grace Pollak in 2019.
Tamrin Seann had a team-high two goals for the Hornets, while Gwenna Gentle and Mayerlin Santos added one apiece. Gentle also compiled one assist. In goal, Moe Brown made seven saves and Allie St. Pierre three.
Furman opened the game with eight straight goals in just over 10 minutes, then pushed its lead out to 12-2 at halftime after scoring four more times during the last 10:33. LaMotte scored four times in the first half with her last giving the Paladins a 10-2 advantage at the 9:31 mark. Beal's third goal of the game with 7:22 remaining gave Furman a 10-goal lead at intermission.
The Paladins had six different goal scorers in the second half, highlighted by the first career goals for Epstein and Bowen. Shaw's third goal of the game extended Furman's lead to 20-2 with 11:54 to go.
Delaware State recorded the last two goals of the game to put the final score at 20-4.
The Paladins conclude their regular season on the road Sunday afternoon at 12 p.m. against 10
th-ranked Loyola (Md.).
