Greenville, S.C. – Right-hander Morgan Scott tossed a two-hit shutout and fanned 14 batters to lead UNCG to a 4-0 victory in the series finale of a three-game Southern Conference series on Saturday afternoon at Pepsi Stadium.
The Paladins, who swept Friday's doubleheader to win the series, dropped to 8-15 overall and 2-1 in the SoCon, while the Spartans improved to 17-10 overall and 3-3 in league play.
After four scoreless frames, UNCG broke through with four runs in the top of the fifth inning. Katie Stettler reached base and advanced to third on an error with one out before Delaney Cumbie worked a four-pitch walk. Maycin Brown followed with a three-run blast to straightaway center field to hand the Spartans a 3-0 lead. Makenna Matthijs followed with a double to chase Paladin starter
Shelby Basso, but Jasmine Palmer was hit by the first pitch from reliever
Sierra Tufts and Samantha Lagrama singled up the middle to increase the lead to 4-0.
Scott, who improved to 8-4 in the circle, held the Paladins to just one hit the rest of the way to secure the win. Basso (3-5), who allowed three earned runs on five hits over four and one-third innings, took the loss.
Freshman
Kaitlyn Laudick doubled and drew a pair of walks to lead Furman in the loss.
Furman returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts USC Upstate for a 5 p.m. doubleheader at Pepsi Stadium.
