Gaither’s Second Half Goal Lifts Furman Past College of Charleston, 2-1

Paladins Begin Regular Season August 20 at Presbyterian

Charleston, S.C. – Sophomore Nieva Gaither's goal in the 78th minute proved to be the game-winner as the Furman women's soccer team recorded a 2-1 exhibition victory over the College of Charleston Cougars Tuesday evening from Ralph Lundy Field at Patriots Point.

Gaither, the reigning SoCon Freshman of the Year, broke the 1-1 tie with just over 20 minutes left in the contest on her unassisted goal. The goal came after College of Charleston had tied the game in the 54th minute when Jenna Snead scored following a pass from Shae Yocum.

Hannah Farr gave Furman the early 1-0 lead in the contest, scoring in the 10th minute of play off an assist from Isabella Gutierrez, last season's SoCon Player of the Year.

Jasmine Greene and Grace Baghdady led the Paladins with two shots apiece, while Farr, Gaither and Kyndal Anderson attempted one each. In goal, Furman played all three goalkeepers in Addison Corn, Nora Sampson and Abby Ross. Corn got the start and grabbed one save in 45 minutes of action. Sampson picked up the win after posting 32 scoreless minutes and three saves.

Natalie Sgro led all players with five shots for the Cougars. Bailey Wood and Lindsay Stravolo combined for four saves in goal.

College of Charleston held an 18-7 advantage in shots while the Paladins led 6-5 in attempts on goal.

Furman opens its regular season on Friday, August 20 with a non-conference match against Presbyterian in Clinton, S.C. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
