Greenville, S.C. – Hannah Farr recorded a goal and an assist on Sunday afternoon to lead the Furman women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory in its home opener over the Longwood Lancers from Stone Stadium.
Furman improves to 2-0 on the season while Longwood drops to 0-2 overall.
Farr, a native of Lawrenceville, Ga., got the Paladins on the board first in the 20
th minute off a through ball from
Nieva Gaither and scoring past Longwood goalie Mary Kate Levush. The sophomore followed in the 23
rd minute with a long pass far side to allow
Jasmine Greene to score from 20 yards away and increase Furman's lead to 2-0.
Goalies
Addison Corn and
Nora Sampson combined to hold the Lancers scoreless over the 90 minutes to give the Paladins their second straight shutout to begin the 2021 season. Furman last opened a season with consecutive shutouts in 2016 when it posted five in a row against Coastal Carolina, North Greenville, USC Upstate, Davidson and North Florida.
Greene and Gaither led the Paladins offensively with six shots each, including four on goal, while Farr contributed five. Corn and Sampson both grabbed two saves in goal.
Kiersten Yuhas and Alex Dinger attempted a team-high three shots apiece for Longwood. Levush finished with five saves in the first half while Jordan Horacek had four in the second.
Furman held a 23-12 advantage in shots and 13-4 in attempts on goal. The Paladins also led 10-0 in corner kicks.
Furman continues its five-game homestand on Thursday, August 26, when it hosts UNC Asheville at 7 p.m.
