Greenville, S.C. – The Furman women's soccer team ended in a 2-2 draw for the first time this season against the Georgia State Panthers on Friday evening at Stone Stadium.
Furman's record moves to 4-1-1 on the season while Georgia State is 4-2-1.
The Paladins struck first with two goals from
Nieva Gaither and
Kyndal Anderson during the opening 20 minutes of the contest to go ahead 2-0. Gaither netted her first goal of the season in the 10
th minute while Anderson provided her team-leading fourth in the 18
th minute.
Furman won the ball off a Panther goal kick with Anderson gaining possession off a header and
Jasmine Greene picking up the ball along the sideline just past the Paladin bench. Greene laid a cross back to the front of the six-yard box and the ball deflected off a Georgia State defender. Gaither collected the rebound and scored from six yards away.
Gaither began the series of events leading up to Furman's second goal of the contest, receiving a pass far side from
Isabella Gutierrez. The sophomore made a crossing pass inside the six-yard box where
Hannah Farr's initial attempt was saved by Panther goalkeeper Maria Subies. Gutierrez's follow up was also saved by Subies but deflected away allowing Anderson to collect the rebound and score into the open net.
Gracen Crosby scored twice for Georgia State to even the score at 2-2 over a stretch of 20 minutes. Her first goal of the game came in the 29
th minute after a corner kick near side by Jimena Cabrero. Cabrero laid the ball into a crowd of players inside the 18-yard box, with the ball deflecting to Jolie Ryff. Ryff made a pass to Crosby who scored from 25 yards away inside the right post past Paladin goalkeeper
Addison Corn.
Crosby's second goal of the game in the 49
th minute, tying the score at 2-2, came off a free kick from 35 yards away following a Furman foul.
Gaither led all players with a game-high seven shots including five on goal. Gutierrez registered her second assist of the season while Greene dished out her first. Corn recorded a season-high six saves in goal.
Crosby had a team-leading five shots, and three attempts on goal, for the Panthers. Ryff added an assist. In goal, Subies finished with eight saves.
The Paladins held a 21-19 advantage in shots, and 10-8 in attempts on goal, while also leading 7-2 in corner kicks.
Furman travels to Elon next Friday, September 17 for a 7 p.m. kickoff against the Phoenix.
