Furman Shuts Out Tennessee Tech, 26-0

COOKEVILLE TENN. -- Devin Wynn ran for two touchdowns, Timmy Bleekrode kicked four field goals, and Furman's defense notched the program's first shutout in 17 seasons in blanking Tennessee Tech, 26-0, at Tucker Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Wynn scored on runs of 42 and two yards, and Bleekrode capped his four-field goal effort with a career long 51-yarder on the first play of the fourth quarter to highlight the bulk of Furman's offensive effort that proved more than enough in helping the Paladins improve to 2-0.

Furman's defense paved the way, helping the Paladins post their first shutout since blanking Elon, 10-0, in a Oct. 23, 2004, by limiting the Golden Eagles to only six first downs and 121 total yards.  In addition, Furman's defense accounted for three sacks and registered three interceptions in the dominating performance.

Junior cornerback Travis Blackshear, who came up big with an interception, a forced fumble, and a sack in the Paladins' season opening, 29-18 triumph over North Carolina A&T a week ago, extended his strong early season play by recording a pair of interceptions against the Golden Eagles for a combined 50 yards in returns that set up a field goal and touchdown.

Wynn got Furman on the board midway through the first quarter when he took an option pitch around right end ad bounced off a couple of defenders along the sideline before cutting back across the field, outrunning the Tennessee Tech defense to the goal line for the score and a 7-0 lead following Bleekrode's PAT.

Two plays later Blackshear registered the first of his two interceptions when he collected an errant pass from the Golden Eagles' Davis Shanley and returned it to the TTU 27 to set up the first of Bleekrode's four field goals, from 32 yards, to make it 10-0.

Bleekrode booted a 45-yard field goal into the wind midway through the second quarter, and finished off the first half and a 12-play, 51-yard drive with a 25-yard effort to send the Paladins into the locker room at halftime with a 16-0 advantage.

Furman's defense slammed the door on Tennessee Tech in the second half, limiting the Golden Eagles to just one first down and 18 total yards on 21 plays.

Bleekrode, who also averaged 38.5 yards on six punts in the contest, completed his perfect day on the first play of the fourth quarter by drilling a career long 51-yard field goal to stretch the lead to 19-0.

The Paladins' third interception of the game, by fifth-year safety DiMarcus Clay, set up their final score of the contest.  Following a 37-yard pass from quarterback Hamp Sisson to Zach Peterson to the TTU 2, Wynn found the end zone off the left side for his  second touchdown of the game.

Wynn's scores came in his 17-carry, 84-yard rushing effort, which paced a Paladin ground game that netted 167 yards.

Sisson completed 17-of-29 passes for 196 yards and added 25 yards rushing.  His favorite target was true freshman wide receiver Joshua Harris, who caught five passes for 54 yards.

Furman outgained Tennessee Tech 371-121, limiting the Golden Eagles to just 23 rushing yards on 22 carries.  Two TTU quarterbacks combined to connect on just 11-of-29 passes with three interceptions.

The Paladins play at N.C. State next Saturday in a 7:30 contest.
