Three Paladins Record Double-Doubles in Five-Set Victory over LIU

Tolone, Mrus, Turner Finish with Double-Doubles

Jacksonville, Fla. – Maya Mrus, Bella Tolone and Sarah Turner each collected double-doubles on Saturday morning as the Furman volleyball team closed out play at the Dolphin Classic with a 3-2 (18-25, 25-20, 25-19, 23-25, 15-10) win over the LIU Sharks from Jacksonville's Swisher Gym.

Furman improves to 5-3 on the season while LIU falls to 2-7 overall.

Tolone recorded her team-leading third double-double of the season, while Mrus and Turner added their second, in the victory. Mrus totaled a team-high 19 kills to go with 19 digs while Tolone added 16 kills and a career-high 17 digs. Turner contributed 29 assists and 14 digs. Neci Harris had 16 kills and Mikaela Schultz 11. Ella Abraham led the Paladins with a career-high 30 assists.

Jovana Stekovic registered a double-double of 22 kills and 12 digs to lead the Sharks. Miranda Strongman provided 12 kills and Allie Merz 32 assists. Anastasia Scott led all players with a game-high 29 digs.

The teams split the first 10 points of the first set when Mrus tied the score at 5-5 with her service ace. LIU broke the set open with a 17-6 run and went ahead 22-11 following a Furman service error. The Paladins got as close as five, 22-17, when Schultz's kill capped a 5-0 run which also included three service aces from Aceveda. Strongman won the set for the Sharks, 25-18, with her kill.

Tolone and Schultz combined for nine of Furman's 18 kills in the second set. The Paladins trailed only once during the frame and opened by scoring four of the first five points. With the score tied at 13-13 midway, Furman used a 10-4 run to take a 23-17 lead which was finished by back-to-back kills from Tolone and Schultz. Tolone added two more kills to secure the 25-20 win.

Harris led the team with five kills, while the Paladins hit .303 overall, in the third set. Neither team led by more than three points during the early stages before Tolone made the score 10-10 with her kill. Furman continued its run after that, scoring nine of the next 13 points, to hold a 19-14 advantage on a kill from Tolone. A solo block by Harris gave the Paladins their largest lead of the set at 23-17. Turner captured the set for Furman, 25-19, with her service ace.

LIU opened the fourth set on a 6-2 run but Furman responded with an 8-4 run of its own to tie the score at 10-10 on Schultz's kill. The Sharks followed with a 14-8 run to sit at set point, 24-18, when Stekovic connected on a kill. The Paladins made a late charge, scoring five consecutive points, to trail 24-23 after Mrus' kill. LIU won the set on the following play when Stekovic recorded a kill.

Mrus had six of Furman's 10 kills in the fifth set as the team posted a .348 hitting percentage. The Paladins began the set on a 5-1 run highlighted by two kills from Mrus. The Sharks managed to cut their deficit down to 5-4 with a kill from Stekovic. A 7-2 run followed for Furman, with Mrus recording four more kills, to increase its lead out to 12-6. Harris had the final two kills for the Paladins with her last giving them the 15-10 set win and securing the match victory, 3-2.

With the win, Furman moves to 2-0 this season in five-set matches.

The Paladins concluded the match hitting .259 as a team, and held the advantage in kills (73-53), assists (69-47), digs (82-68) and service aces (11-9).

Furman hosts Kennesaw State and High Point in a pair of non-conference matches next week at Alley Gym. The Paladins face Kennesaw State on September 16 at 6 p.m. and High Point on September 17 at 7 p.m.
