Furman Suffers 1-0 Defeat at Mercer in SoCon Opener

Roberts Finishes with Career-High Eight Saves

Macon, Ga. – Kadeem Agard's goal in the 80th minute lifted the Mercer Bears to a 1-0 victory over the Furman Paladins in SoCon men's soccer action, Saturday evening from Betts Stadium.

Furman falls to 1-5 overall and 0-1 in the conference, while Mercer improves to 3-3 on the season and 1-0 in league play.

Angel Gonzalez was credited with the assist on Agard's goal that was set up by a through pass that he controlled around the 18-yard box. Gonzalez kept the ball from going past the touchline and made a pass back to the top of the six-yard box. Agard's sliding attempt found its way past Paladin goalkeeper Ben Roberts inside the right post.

Roberts registered a career-high eight saves in the contest highlighted by seven in the first half. Callum Holland attempted a team-best two shots and was one of six players to have one attempt on goal.

Dylan Gaither led all players with four shots for the Bears and added three attempts on goal along with Agard. Goalkeeper Trevor McMullin finished with six saves.

Mercer held an 11-9 advantage in shots and 9-6 in attempts on goal. Furman led 5-3 in corner kicks.

The Paladins return to non-conference play on Tuesday, September 21 when they travel to Asheville, N.C. for a 6 p.m. kickoff against UNC Asheville.
