Greenville, S.C. – Four different Paladins recorded a goal, including the first two for the career of
Ashlyn Goila, on Sunday afternoon as Furman picked up a 5-0 non-conference victory over the North Greenville Crusaders in women's soccer action at Stone Stadium.
The Paladins improve to 4-1 on the season while North Greenville falls to 0-1-1 overall.
Goila, a freshman from Delray Beach, Fla., led Furman with career-highs of five points on two goals and one assist as the Paladins scored four times in the second half en route to a season-best five goals.
Kyndal Anderson netted her team-leading third goal of the season while
Hayley Foster recorded her second.
Grace Baghdady followed with her first goal of the year.
Nieva Gaither dished out two assists and
Camryn Bolick contributed one.
Anderson gave the Paladins an early 1-0 lead in the seventh minute scoring off a corner kick. Bolick took the corner kick far side and placed the ball just past the right post. Goila kept the ball from going out of bounds by flicking it over her head back to the middle of the eight-yard box. Anderson beat the Crusader defender and placed her header past NGU goalie Lizzy Luzzi.
Foster quickly extended Furman's lead to 2-0 less than a minute into the second half. Gaither's initial attempt was saved by Luzzi but Foster was there for the rebound and put-back goal.
Goila collected her two goals within a 14-minute stretch scoring in both the 56
th and 69
th minutes to make the score 4-0. Gaither was credited with the assist on Goila's first goal when her cross at the edge of the 18-yard box near side found the midfielder, allowing her to score from eight yards away. Goila tallied her second goal off a corner kick near side by Bolick.
Baghdady capped the scoring for the Paladins in the 75
th minute to put the final score at 5-0. Foster's initial attempt from inside the 18-yard box hit off the bottom of the crossbar and Baghdady scored off the rebound.
Furman held a 29-3 advantage in shots and 15-2 in attempts on goal. The Paladins also led 11-0 in corner kicks, marking the third time this season they have held an opponent without a corner kick.
Baghdady and
Jasmine Greene attempted a team-leading five shots for Furman, while Gaither and Goila had three attempts on goal apiece.
Addison Corn,
Nora Sampson and
Abby Ross combined for the shutout. Corn grabbed two saves in the first half.
Abby Mayer, Faith Knoedler and Victoria Valentine each had one shot for North Greenville. Luzzi finished with 10 saves in goal.
The Paladins close out their five-game homestand on Friday, September 10 at 7 p.m. against Georgia State.
