Furman Drops 3-1 Home Decision to Winthrop

Diaz-Santillan Scores First Goal of the Season

Greenville, S.C. – Brigham Larsen scored two second-half goals on Monday evening to give the Winthrop Eagles a 3-1 victory in non-conference action over the Furman men's soccer team at Stone Stadium.

Furman drops to 1-2 on the season while Winthrop improves to 2-1 overall.

With the score tied 1-1 at halftime, Larsen registered goals in the 58th and 89th minutes to give the Eagles the two-goal victory. Larsen's first goal in the 58th minute came after a long pass by Taeyoon Oh. The ball bounced over the Paladin defense and Larsen outran the defender to score over the head of goalie Ben Roberts. Larsen sealed Winthrop's win in the 89th minute with his second goal giving it a 3-1 advantage. Furman failed to clear the ball on its side of the field and Larsen picked up the rebound inside the 18-yard box, scoring past Roberts.

The Eagles struck first in the 9th minute on Jonathan Foster's goal with Jayden Mace being credited with the assist. Mace lifted a cross outside the 18-yard box near Winthrop's bench and Foster ran in front of the Paladin defender scoring just inside the right post three yards away.

Alfredo Diaz-Santillan equalized for Furman in the 39th minute with his first goal of the season. Miles Fenton, who dished out his first assist of the season, intercepted an attempted clear and dribbled outside the 18-yard box and lofted a pass over the Eagle defense. Diaz-Santillan headed the pass 10 yards away into the left side of the net by Eagle goalie Sam Bell.

Jake Raine attempted a team-high four shots for the Paladins while Dylan Lane contributed three. Diaz-Santillan finished with two shots and both going on goal. Roberts grabbed five saves.

Larsen took three shots, including two on goal, to go with his two goals for Winthrop. Foster also had two shots on goal. Bell recorded a total of four saves.

Furman held a 14-13 advantage in shots and led 8-6 in corner kicks.

The Paladins play the third game of their four-game homestand on Saturday, September 11 hosting USC Upstate at 7 p.m.
