GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The Furman women's tennis team will travel to Auburn, Ala., this weekend to take on both UAB and Auburn at the Yarbrough Tennis Center. The Paladins will square off against UAB Saturday at 1 p.m. then will face the Tigers on Sunday at 11 a.m.
Furman enters the weekend at 2-0 after defeating VCU, 5-2, and Emmanuel (Ga.), 7-0, last Saturday. The Paladins won five of six singles matches versus the Rams and swept the Lions in singles and doubles. Furman head coach Adam Herendeen, who is in his seventh season leading the Paladin program, is seeking his 200th career win this weekend. He has amassed a 199-79 career record and a 120-37 mark at the helm of the Furman program.
The Paladins last met the Blazers in 1991, when Furman defeated UAB, 9-0, in Birmingham to take a 2-0 series lead. The only other meeting between the two teams came in 1988, with the Paladins winning, 5-4. Saturday's match marks the 2022 season opener for UAB.
Auburn leads the all-times series against Furman, 11-0, after slipping past the Paladins, 4-3, in last year's spring season opener. The Tigers, who rank 25th nationally, will open the 2022 season Sunday versus Furman.
The Paladins rewrote the record books during the spring of 2021, as Furman put together a 21-7 overall record and 7-0 SoCon mark with victories over Alabama, No. 16 Wake Forest, No. 18 South Carolina, Virginia Tech, and Clemson. Furman rose as high as 23rd in the ITA national rankings, marking the highest ranking in program history. The Paladins, who won the SoCon regular season championship, claimed their fourth-consecutive and 20th overall tournament championship and made their fourth-straight appearance in the NCAA Champ
Furman senior Julia Adams is currently ranked 45th nationally in singles, while freshman Sara Snyder is rated 65th, according to the latest ITA Division I National Rankings, which were released last month.
