GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Furman blanked Emmanuel, 7-0, Saturday at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C.
The Paladins won all three doubles matches to take the doubles point. Senior Ivan Mitric and freshman Jamie Connel topped Joan Grosset and Nathan Benoit, 6-3, at flight one, and Cole Burnam and Elijah Poritzky beat Thembo Makhanya and Javier Crespo, 6-1, at number two. At flight three, freshman Connor Laymon teamed with sophomore Ben Cahill for a 7-6(5) advantage over Juan Camilo Burgos and Kornel Kimaszewski.
Furman swept the singles matches, winning the top four in straight sets. Connel defeated Makhanya, 6-1, 6-0, at flight one, and Poritzky downed Benoit, 6-2, 7-5, at flight two. In the number three contest, senior Drew Singerman entered the lineup to beat Crespo, 6-1, 6-1. Burnam posted a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Hassan Badran at flight four singles.
The Paladins won in tiebreakers at flights five and six. Laymon came from behind to defeat Kimaszewski, 3-6, 6-3, 1-0(10-7) at number five, and junior Jason Smith held off Grosset, 6-7, 6-1, 1-0(10-2), at number six.
Furman (2-1) is idle until February 9, when the Paladins entertain Presbyterian at 3 p.m. at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville.
