DURHAM, N.C. -- Furman routed Nebraska, 4-1, Sunday in the final day of the ITA Kickoff Weekend at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center in Durham, N.C.
The Paladins scored two doubles victories to secure the opening point. Junior Madison Dillon and freshman Ellie Schulson topped Chloe Kuckelman and Ellie Kuckelman, 6-1, at flight two, and freshmen Sara Snyder and Jess Dawson held off Samantha Alicea and Isabel A. Gallego, 6-4, at number three. Flight one's match was unfinished with Furman senior Julia Adams and sophomore Ellie Schoppe tied, 4-4, with Kristina Novak and Maja Makoric.
Furman scored three singles points, two in straight sets, for the team win. Schoppe blew past Gallego, 6-1, 6-3, at flight three, and Snyder, who ranks 65th nationally, came from behind for a 5-7, 6-3, 6-3, advantage over Chloe Kuckelman at flight four. At number five, Dawson beat Alicea, 6-3, 6-4.Â
The Cornhuskers scored at flight one, where Novak topped 45th-ranked Adams, 7-5, 3-6, 6-1. Â
The matches at flights two and six were unfinished in third sets. Dillon led Makoric, 7-5, 3-6, 5-4, at flight two, and Schulson split with Kuckelman, 6-3, 6-7(5), at number six.
Furman (4-2) will entertain Duke Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Mickel Tennis Center.
