Greensboro, N.C. – No. 20 UNC Greensboro netted four second half goals en route to a 5-1 victory over Furman in the Southern Conference men's soccer opener for both schools Saturday evening at UNCG Stadium.
After Ismail El Harchi flicked a JC Ngando cross into the top shelf to put the Spartans in front in the 20
th minute, Furman answered in the 61
st minute. UNCG attempted to clear a Paladin cross into the box, but
Sam Miller pounced to volley a strike past the goalkeeper from the left side of the box at 60:03 to level the match at 1-1.
The flood gates opened, however, at 64:15 when El Harchi fired a left-footed shot past Paladin goalkeeper
Ben Roberts from the left side of the box after receiving a pass from Marco Alfonso. El Harchi fed a pass to Steven Hernandez for a 78
th minute goal before Ngando converted from the penalty spot less than two minutes later. Maycol Reyes capped the scoring off a Ngando assist at the 82:34 mark.
UNCG (6-1-3, 1-0 SoCon) posted a commanding 22-4 advantage in shot attempts, including a 17-3 margin over the final 45 minutes. The Spartans finished with a 12-2 edge in shots on goal.
Niclas Wild notched one save to earn the victory in goal for UNCG. Roberts stopped seven shots for the Paladins.
Furman (5-3-1, 0-1-0 SoCon) looks to bounce back when it travels to Spartanburg, S.C., to face USC Upstate on Tuesday at 7 p.m. The Paladins return home to host Mercer on Saturday, October 8.
