Furman, Mercer Play To Scoreless Draw In Seventh Annual Quinn Game

Greenville, S.C. – Senior Ben Roberts helped Furman to its sixth shutout of the season as the Paladins earned a point with a scoreless draw versus Mercer in the Seventh Annual Quinn Game for Down Syndrome Awareness sponsored by Common Pops Saturday night on Seagraves Field at Stone Soccer Stadium.

"It was a great night to honor Quinn and raise awareness about Down Syndrome," said Allison, who led the pregame ceremony in which 10-year old Quinn Cronin netted the only goal of the night. "We are so appreciative to everyone for coming out to show their support and for all our Furman soccer alumni who were here tonight. It's great to get another shutout."

After a first half that featured just four total shots, the chances picked up over the final 45 minutes. Roberts smothered a shot by Mercer's Michael Ille before Alfredo Diaz-Santillan came close to scoring twice near the hour mark, curling one of his efforts just wide of the right post.

With Furman pushing forward in the final 15 minutes, Lashawn Brown nearly gave the Paladins the lead at 84:36 when his shot was punched off the crossbar by Bears' goalkeeper Trevor McMullen. Diaz-Santillan had one more opportunity in the final moments but couldn't turn his shot on target.

Mercer (4-3-6, 0-0-2 SoCon) held an 8-7 edge in total shot attempts and a 3-1 margin in shots on goal. McMullen finished with one stop for the Bears, while Roberts recorded three saves in his fifth solo shutout of the season for Furman.

The Paladins (5-3-3, 0-1-1 SoCon) are back in action on Wednesday night when they travel to face the Davidson Wildcats.
