Furman Falls To Gardner-Webb, 90-57

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Lauren Bevis tallied a game high 17 points to lead a parade of four double figure scorers and Gardner-Webb to a 90-57 victory over Furman in women's basketball action Tuesday evening at Timmons Arena.

Bevis drained 5-of-9 3-point attempts to top a strong shooting effort by Gardner-Webb (2-1), which converted 12-of-25 shots from beyond the arc and shot 49.3 percent overall from the field (33x67) in racing to the victory.

Furman (2-1) got a game high 16 points from freshman Jaelyn Acker, who converted all 14 free throw attempts — one shy of the school record 15-of-15 performance registered by head coach Jackie Carson as a Paladin freshman in 1997.

Furman made 26-of-29 free throws in the contest.

Sydney Ryan, who earlier on Tuesday was named Southern Conference Player of the Week, followed Acker in the scoring column with 12 points.

The Paladins trailed 16-13 after one period, but Gardner-Webb quickly took control thereafter, using a 12-0 run to start the second period for a 28-13 advantage.  Bevis keyed the Runnin' Bulldogs' decisive frame by converting all three 3-point tries to send Gardner-Webb into the locker room 35-18.

Gardner-Webb's pressure defense helped force Furman into 28 turnovers, which the Bulldogs converted into a 35-10 scoring advantage.

Furman's next game is Saturday at Stetson in Deland, Fla.  Tipoff is set for 5:00 p.m.
