Charleston, S.C. – Furman used a 15-2 second half run to cut a 20-point deficit to seven, but Old Dominion held on to claim an 82-77 victory over the Paladins on Friday afternoon in the Shriners Children's Charleston Classic at TD Arena. 
 
With Furman trailing 67-47 and under nine minutes remaining, JP Pegues and Jalen Slawson sparked the 15-2 spurt that helped the Paladins pull within seven points at 69-62 on Marcus Foster's basket with 5:15 to play. Old Dominion stretched its lead back to 10 points with under two minutes left before three-point baskets from Mike Bothwell, Slawson and Pegues sliced to margin to four at 81-77 on Pegues' triple with 10 seconds to go. Chaunce Jenkins, however, converted on a pair of free throws to seal to win for the Monarchs.
 
Old Dominion shot 64.6% for the game, including 70.8% in the final 20 minutes, and connected on 7-of-13 three-point attempts for the game. The Monarchs fashioned a 34-27 halftime lead on 58.3% shooting before draining three consecutive triples to ignite a 14-2 run that put ODU in front 63-44 with 11:18 left.
 
Tyreek Scott-Grayson led ODU with 26 points and Imo Essien and Ben Stanley added 13 apiece. Mekhi Long, who hit two triples in the decisive second half run, added 11. The Monarchs posted a 36-22 edge on the glass and outscored the Paladins 36-26 in the paint.
 
Bothwell scored a team-high 23 for the Paladins, while JP Pegues connected on 4-of-10 threes to net a career-high 20 points. Slawson, who became the 50th player in Paladin history to reach 1,000 career points, tallied 15 points and picked up four steals. Foster rounded out Furman's double figure scorers with 10.
 
The Paladins shot 45.8% and made 12-of-33 three-point attempts. ODU committed 18 turnovers, which led to 25 Paladin points.
 
Furman caps play in the Charleston Classic versus either Davidson or South Carolina at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday.
