GREENVILLE, S.C -- Coming off a 65-64 road victory over UNC Asheville on Wednesday, Furman's women's basketball team will look to extend its winning streak to three games on Sunday when it takes on Coastal Carolina in Conway.
Tipoff for the ESPN+ live streamed contest at the HTC Center is set for 2:00 p.m.
The Paladins' win over UNC Asheville represented the 200th victory for Furman head coach
Jackie Carson, now in her 13th season as mentor at her alma mater, where she once starred as a player.
Grace van Rij's free throw with seven seconds remaining gave Furman (6-4) its first lead in a second half that saw the Paladins overcome a pair of nine-point deficits.
Coastal Carolina (2-5), whose early season schedule has included contests against Georgia, Kentucky, and Wake Forest, dropped a 85-81 decision to College of Charleston in its last outing on Dec. 2.
The Paladins hold a commanding 18-2 lead in its series with the Chanticleers, though the two schools last met during the 2014-15 season in Greenville in a contest the Paladins won handily, 90-56. Furman claimed a 79-72 verdict the previous year in Conway, where it is 7-2 all-time.
Redshirt freshman guard
Jaelyn Acker has been solid for the Paladins in the early going, averaging 14.7 ppg while shooting 37.7 percent from 3-point range (26x69).
van Rij, Furman's All-SoCon graduate forward, came up big in the win over UNC Asheville, scoring 20 points, which she combined with 10 rebounds for her third double-double of the season. The Knoxville, Tenn., product is averaging 12.8 ppg and 7.1 rpg.
One of the biggest keys to the win over UNC Asheville was the performance turned in by freshman forward
Sydney Ryan, who came off the bench to score 18 points, including 15 in the second half. Ryan is contributing 10.8 points and 6.7 rebounds per game while shooting a solid 36.1 percent (13x36) from 3-point range.
Furman, which last year led the SoCon in rebounding, sports a +11.0 rebounding margin behind team leader, sophomore
Jada Session (7.7 rpg).
