The Paladins claimed their sixth win in their last eight outings and improved to 8-4 on the season with a dramatic 72-70 victory over defending WAC regular season champion Stephen F. Austin on Saturday afternoon in the Greenville Winter Invitational at Bon Secours Wellness Arena. Fifth-year seniors
Mike Bothwell and
Jalen Slawson led the way for the Paladins, who saw a 24-point lead evaporate before a last-second jumper by Bothwell secured the victory.
Bothwell, who scored Furman's final 12 points and delivered go-ahead baskets with 27 seconds and 0.6 seconds to go, finished with a career-best 36 points on 12-of-14 shooting from the field and 11-for-11 at the foul line. He leads the Paladins at 21.1 points per game and has scored 20 or more six times in Furman's first 12 games this season. Entering Monday night, the Cleveland Heights, Ohio, native ranks 13
th in school history with 1,616 career points.
Slawson notched his fourth double-double of the season and 14
th of his career with 16 points and 10 rebounds on Saturday. The 6-foot-7 Summerville, S.C., product has averaged 14.8 points, a team-leading 7.0 rebounds, and 3.4 assists per game in 2022-23. He ranks third in school history with 144 career blocked shots and ninth with 160 steals.
Sophomore point guard
JP Pegues has been key when it comes to getting the ball to Furman's top scorers this season. He has dished out a career-high eight assists in each of his last two games and averaged seven assists per game over the last three contests.
With its win over the Lumberjacks on Saturday, Furman, currently No. 91 in the latest Ken Pomeroy Ratings, boasts wins over opponents from the Missouri Valley Conference (Belmont), SEC (South Carolina), Sun Belt (Appalachian State), and WAC (SFA) this season.
Monday's matchup will be the first meeting between the Paladins and Trojans, who are coached by former Furman assistant Jimmie Williams. In his first season at Anderson, Williams has led the Trojans to a 3-9 overall record and 1-2 mark in the South Atlantic Conference. Anderson dropped a 109-85 decision to Samford in its only other meeting versus a Southern Conference opponent this year.
Furman is 64-10 at Timmons Arena during the
Bob Richey era and has won 31 of its last 33 regular season non-conference games in the facility.
Following Monday's game, the Paladins are scheduled to open SoCon play on Thursday, December 29, when they host VMI inside Timmons Arena.
