GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Furman Athletics is excited to announce the creation of three new endowed scholarships to benefit men's golf: the Charles R. Brown Endowed Scholarship, the Langley Family Endowed Scholarship, and the Clark/Mudd Families Endowed Scholarship. Through the generosity of several men's golf alumni and friends of the program, these gifts will directly support student-athletes at Furman, enhancing the long-term financial stability of the program.
"Furman Athletics is proud of the leadership and grateful for the generosity of our men's golf alumni," said Furman Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Jason Donnelly. "The success of the team and the commitment from our alumni and families is inspiring. We look forward to continued growth of the program under Matt Davidson's direction and to achieving the scholarship goals that have been established."
"We are grateful and truly honored that Rob, Scott, Jordan, and Josh would think of Furman Golf with these incredible gifts," said Davidson, who is in his fifth year at the helm of the Paladin program. "Rob Langley has been instrumental in his generous support of Furman golf over the last decade, and his passion for our program and Furman is inspiring. Also thank you so much to fellow Furman golf alumnus Scott Brown for forming the Charles R. Brown scholarship endowment and for all of his instrumental support. Lastly, Jordan Clark and Josh Mudd combining to give a difference-making donation as well is absolutely amazing.
"At Furman, we have coaches, student-athletes, and alumni who do not take these gifts for granted and are so thankful for these three program-changing donations," continued Davidson. "We really wouldn't be at the point we are as a program without their generosity and without the support of so many alumni and Furman golf family.
Scott Brown '92, founder of the Charles R. Brown Endowed scholarship, gave the Furman men's golf endowment effort a boost of momentum when he established this new endowed fund. He was a member of the Paladin men's golf program from 1989-92 and earned a bachelor's degree in business administration.
"I'm thrilled to play a very, very small part in the growth of the Furman golf program," said Brown. "With Matt Davidson we have the right guy, at the right time to lead the golf program back to national prominence. It will be exciting to watch the program evolve over the next few years. Rob Langley has done an incredible job spear-heading this push. Go Paladins!"
In addition to his other philanthropic support of the men's golf program, Langley '05 established the Langley Family Endowed Scholarship and has been instrumental in leading the effort to secure the long-term financial sustainability of the program. He graduated cum laude with a bachelor's degree in business administration, was captain of the Paladin golf team, a two-time All-Southern Conference selection, and was a member of the 2004 SoCon Championship team. Langley went on to compete in two NCAA regionals during his time at Furman. His wife, Lauren Welch Langley '04, was a member of the Furman women's tennis team.
"As former Furman student-athletes, Lauren and I are thankful for the opportunities we had at Furman and the life lessons learned along the way around hard work, time management, perseverance, and working with teammates to pursue ambitious goals," said Langley. "We are excited to provide that same opportunity to future student-athletes."
Josh Mudd '05 and Graham Clark Mudd '08 partnered with Jordan and Patti Clark to establish their families' endowed scholarship.
Jordan Clark has served two terms as a member of the Furman Board of Trustees. He has also served on the Campaign Executive Committee and President's Advisory Council. He and wife Patti are both alumni of Davidson College, Atlanta residents, and have been very involved with Furman as parents (daughters, Suzanne '11 and Graham '08).
"Furman obviously has a rich history in both men and women's golf, and we are enthusiastic about enhancing the program going forward," said Clark. "Furman now has the facilities and the coaches to enable the golf program to enjoy national prominence."
"Our scholarship endowment provides opportunities for students to do what Rob, Scott, and I all did, which was get an elite education at Furman while playing in a premier golf program where we felt we could reach our potential in our sport," said Davidson. "The fact we are closing in on our goal of fully endowing the Furman men's golf program to the NCAA maximum 4.5 scholarships is exciting and also humbling because of all of the people who have played a role in this with their time, effort, and donations."
