GREENVILLE, S.C. -- With the score knotted at 3-all, senior Drew Singerman defeated Edward Tymes, 7-5, 6-4, at flight six singles to lead Furman past Georgia State, 4-3, Sunday in a barn burner at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C.
The Paladins (5-1) won the doubles point with victories at flights one and three. Senior Ivan Mitric and freshman Jamie Connel topped Andrei Duarte and Roberts Grinvalds, 7-5, in the top-seeded match up, and freshmen Cole Burnam and Elijah Poritzky beat Patrick Lazo and Diego Padilha, 6-3, at number three. The flight two match was unfinished, with senior James Roelofse and sophomore Emil Westling leading Kevin Huynh and Harvey Maughan, 6-5.
The Panthers (3-2) claimed the first three singles points and appeared to be in control of the match with a 3-1 lead. Grinvalds recorded a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Mitric at flight one, and Duarte held off Connel, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, at number two. At flight four, Huynh beat Roelofse, 6-1, 6-4.
Furman's Poritzky then came from behind for a 4-6, 7-6(5), 6-3, advantage over Maughan at flight three to cut the deficit to 3-2, before Westling beat Lazo, 6-2, 6-3, at number five to tie the score and set up the decisive flight six contest.
The Paladins will entertain Lipscomb and Belmont Abbey Saturday at the Mickel Tennis Center beginning at 10 a.m.
