Greenville, S.C. – The Furman softball team continued play at the Furman Classic on Saturday splitting a pair of games against the Saint Francis Red Flash and Georgetown Hoyas at Pepsi Stadium.
Furman began the day by defeating Saint Francis 7-5 before falling to Georgetown 4-3.
The Paladins are now 3-5 on the season while Saint Francis dropped to 4-5 and Georgetown improved to 3-6.
Game 1 – Saint Francis 5, Furman 7
Lauralee Scott earned her first career victory in the circle and
Emily Bartlett and
Marina Griffin both had three RBI to lead Furman to the two-run victory.
Ashlee Lykins and
Riley Ludlam recorded two hits while Bartlett and Griffin drove in three runs apiece. Ludlam also scored three runs.
Jordan Pietrzykoski, Lindsay Ward, Jordan Frank and Ashley Wruble all collected two hits for the Red Flash. Four different players registered one RBI and Ward scored two runs.
Scott (1-1) pitched 4.2 innings and gave up two runs on seven hits, four walks and no strikeouts.
Sierra Tufts (1) collected the save pitching one scoreless inning of relief. Grace Vesco (1-4) took the loss allowing six runs on six hits, 10 walks and four strikeouts.
The Paladins ran out to a 6-0 lead through four innings after plating one in the third and five in the fourth. Griffin drew a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the third and later added a two RBI single in the fourth. Bartlett highlighted the bottom of the fourth with her three RBI double.
Saint Francis scored twice in its half of the fifth to make the score 6-2, but Furman added a run back in the bottom of the fifth when Ludlam hit her first home run of the season.
The Red Flash made a late rally and trailed 7-5 with no outs in the top of the seventh after scoring twice in the sixth and got an RBI single two batters in during the seventh. Saint Francis had a runner on third base with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but Tufts ended the game forcing a ground out to
Alex Rose Molinar at shortstop.
Game 2 – Georgetown 4, Furman 3
Kayla Dunn threw a complete game and had two RBI along with Alyssa Chavez as the Hoyas held off the Paladins 4-3.
Lykins provided two hits for Furman and Ludlam added one RBI.
Dunn and Chavez both went 1-for-3 at the plate with two RBI while Mae Forshey, Abby Smith and Cassie Henning all tallied one hit.
Dunn (1-0) struck out 14 batters over seven innings and surrendered only two hits to go with three runs (none earned) and six walks. Tufts (1-3) suffered the loss pitching 3.1 innings and allowed four runs on five hits, one walk and one strikeout.
The Paladins took the early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second when Bartlett scored from second base on a Georgetown error.
The Hoyas answered with four runs in the top of the fourth on a pair of two RBI singles from Chavez and Dunn. Furman came back in its half of the fourth as Ludlam's sacrifice fly to right field and a Georgetown throwing error led to two runs.
