RICHMOND, VA. -- No. 60 Furman blanked Richmond, 4-0, Sunday at the Westhampton Tennis Complex in Richmond, Va.
The Paladins won two doubles matches to take the first point. Senior Ivan Mitric teamed up with freshman Jamie Connel for a 6-4 victory over Daniel Kliebhan and Josh Keitelman at flight one, and freshmen Cole Burnam and Elijah Poritzky blew past Alex Wernink and Sebastian Miano, 6-1, at number three. The flight two contest was unfinished, with the Spiders' John Walsh and Campbell Erwin leading senior James Roelofse and sophomore Emil Westling, 4-3.
Furman picked up points at flights one, five, and six for the win. Mitric defeated Wernink, 6-4, 6-1, at flight one, and Westling topped Keitelman, 6-3, 6-2, at flight five. Senior Drew Singerman entered the lineup at number six, where he beat Ricky Bell, 6-1, 6-1.
Matches at flights two through five were unfinished. Walsh and Connel split the first two sets at flight two, each winning one set, 6-1, and Connel led, 2-0, in the third set. At flight three, Erwin won the first set, 6-3, but Poritzky countered with a 6-2 advantage in set two. In the number four contest, Miano took set one, 6-2, but Roelofse was leading, 3-2, in the second set.
The Paladins (8-2) will face top-ranked Tennessee Tuesday at 1 p.m. in Knoxville, Tenn.
