Johnson City, Tenn. – Ledarrius Brewer totaled a double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds on Monday evening to lead the East Tennessee State Buccaneers to a 75-71 victory over the Furman men's basketball team in Southern Conference play from Freedom Hall.
Furman drops to 17-9 on the season and 9-4 in league play, while East Tennessee State improves to 13-13 overall and 5-8 in the conference.
Jalen Slawson and
Mike Bothwell both registered 15 points to lead the Paladins offensively. Slawson was 7-of-14 from the field to go with six rebounds, three assists and three blocks. Bothwell connected on 6-of-9 field goal attempts and dished out a team high four assists.
Conley Garrison contributed 14 points, six rebounds and three assists.
Marcus Foster and
Garrett Hien each had 10 points.
The Buccaneers had all five starters finish in double figures led by Ledarrius Brewer's double-double, making five field goals and going 8-for-9 at the free throw line. Ty Brewer added 12 points and eight rebounds, and Jordan King also provided 12 points. Jaden Seymour poured in 11 points while David Sloan tallied 10 points and a game high six assists.
ETSU led by 15 points three times during the opening four minutes of the second half after leading by double digits at intermission. Furman used a 17-2 run over the next 4:58, led by nine consecutive points to start, and tied the game at 57-57 with 11:28 remaining on Hien's 3-pointer. East Tennessee State responded by scoring eight of the next 11 points and extended its lead to 62-57 three minutes later.
The Paladins would take their first lead of the game at the 7:46 mark when Bothwell's layup capped a 7-1 run and put them ahead 64-63. Slawson's driving layup with 5:18 remaining put Furman back in the lead at 68-67.
The Paladins did not score a point over the following 5:05 as the Buccaneers scored seven straight points, including five at the free throw line, to take a 74-68 advantage with 12 seconds to go.
Alex Hunter ended Furman's scoreless streak by knocking down a 3-pointer with two seconds left to cut its deficit to 74-71. Ledarrius Brewer sealed the win for ETSU by making 1-of-2 free throws after the triple from Hunter.
The Buccaneers started the game on a 10-2 run and led by double figures over the final 11:29 of the first half. The Paladins got to within seven points, 23-16, at the 11:56 mark when Bothwell connected on a 3-pointer. ETSU held its largest lead of the half with 5:58 to go when Sloan's 3-pointer put the score at 36-18. Hunter's layup with 13 seconds to go sent Furman into halftime trailing 43-30.
The Paladins concluded the game shooting 51.9 percent (28-of-54) from the field including a 60.7 percent (17-of-28) mark, and seven 3-pointers, in the second half.
Furman is off for the next four days before returning to action on Saturday, February 12 hosting Chattanooga at 2 p.m. from Timmons Arena.
