Furman Drops 21-10 Home Decision to Virginia Tech

Beal Wins Career High Nine Draws; Beal Scores Career Best Two Goals

Greenville, S.C. – Olivia Vergano had a game high eight points to lead the Virginia Tech Hokies to a 21-10 win over the Furman women's lacrosse team in non-conference play, Tuesday evening at Paladin Stadium.

Furman drops to 0-3 on the season while Virginia Tech improves to 7-3 overall.

Hannah Dintino paced the Paladins offensively with four points on two goals and two assists while Lauren Farber provided three points on two goals and one assist. Paige Harman scored a career best two goals and Sophia Buzelis netted the first of her career. Meagan Beal posted two points on one goal and one assist and won a career high nine draws. Andrea Fisher set new career highs with three ground balls and two caused turnovers.

In goal, Lily Rathbun registered 12 saves and had a team best four ground balls.

Vergano led all players with six goals and dished out two assists along with Sarah Lubnow and Whitney Liebler. Vergano also won eight draws while Lubnow had a hat trick and Liebler four ground balls. Sophie Student added a hat trick and Jordan Tilley caused four turnovers.

Morgan Berman had three saves in goal for the Hokies to go with three ground balls.

Harman put Furman on the board first with her goal less than two minutes into the contest before Virginia Tech scored twice to lead 2-1 five minutes later. Harman's second goal evened the score at 2-2 with 6:12 left in the first quarter. After Student recorded back-to-back goals, Dintino cut the Paladins' deficit down to 4-3 at the 3:32 mark. The Hokies ended the quarter with two straight goals to lead 6-3.

Virginia Tech continued its run into the second quarter scoring two more times to hold an 8-3 advantage at the 8:49 mark. Beal and Bionda teamed up for the next two Furman goals and trailed 8-5 with just under five minutes remaining in the first half. The Hokies added three more goals over a stretch of nearly three minutes to go in front 11-5. Dintino's goal with 1:15 to go sent the game into halftime with Virginia Tech leading 11-6.

The Paladins came out to begin the second half tallying goals from Buzelis and Sophie Shaw to trail 11-8 with 10:59 to go. The Hokies outscored Furman 6-2 during the final 10:07 of the third quarter and held a 17-10 lead heading to the fourth. Farber scored both Paladin goals at the 4:17 and 1:32 marks.

Virginia Tech scored all four goals in the fourth quarter to put the final score at 21-10.

Furman held an 18-17 advantage in draws led by Beal's nine and four from Farber.

The Paladins begin a two-game road trip on Saturday, March 19 when they travel to Emmitsburg, Md. to face Mount St. Mary's at 3 p.m.
