GREENVILLE, S.C. -- No. 24 Furman blanked Wofford, 7-0, Thursday at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C., in the Paladins' Southern Conference opener.

With the victory over the Terriers, the Paladins maintained possession of the Pinson Cup.  Bobby and Dixie Pinson, beloved friends of both the Furman and Wofford programs, have given the trophy and a generous donation in honor of the rivalry between the two schools.  The trophy stays with the winning school until the winner of the next season's match is determined, and the Paladins have been awarded the trophy each year since its inception in 2005.

The Paladins won at flights one and three doubles to take the first point.  Senior Julia Adams and sophomore Ellie Schoppe, who rank 44th nationally, blanked Lilie Steryous and Liz Massie, 6-0, at number one, and freshmen Jess Dawson and Sara Snyder blew past Breda Brennan and Emma Sorensen, 6-1, at number three.  The Terriers won at flight two, where Georgia Fischer and Brianna Wilbur recorded a 6-4 advantage over junior Madison Dillon and freshman Ellie Schulson.

Furman scored at all six singles flights, winning each in straight sets.  Adams, who ranks 53rd nationally, topped Steryous, 6-1, 6-1, at flight one, and Schoppe beat Massie, 6-2, 6-2, at flight two.  At number three, Dillon held off Fischer, 7-6(6), 6-2, and at number four, Snyder tallied a 6-1, 6-1 victory versus Wilbur.  Schulson picked up the point at flight five, where she beat Emely Kahrs, 6-3, 6-2, and Dawson completed the sweep with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Brennan.

Furman (12-5, 1-0 SoCon) will play at Clemson Saturday at noon to conclude the non-conference portion of the schedule.
