SUNSET, S.C. -- Junior Anna Morgan (-1) fired a 1-under 71 Saturday to tie for seventh and help the 46th-ranked Furman women's golf team to fourth place in the standings following Friday's first day of competition at the sixth annual Clemson Invitational at the par 72, 6,386 yard The Reserve at Lake Keowee in Sunset, S.C.
Morgan, who hails from Spartanburg, S.C., is one of three Paladins among the top 14 after one round of play. Morgan teed off on No. 10 and birdied No. 11 to turn at 1-over. She then birdied three of four holes from No. 2 through No. 5 to conclude the day two strokes back of Notre Dame's Chloe Schiavone (-3) and Florida's Marina Escobar Domingo (-3), who lead the tournament after each carded a 69 on Friday.
Freshman Savannah Hylton (E) is tied for 10th place after carding an even 72 with birdies on No. 2 and No. 8, and sophomore Sophia Burnett (+1) is tied for 14th after posting a 73 with three birdies on Friday. Senior Sarah-Eve Rhéaume (+7) and Kyra Cox (+7) enter Saturday's round tied for 68th. The Paladin duo each shot a 79 in round one, with Rhéaume birdieing No. 5 and No. 18 and Cox adding birdies on No. 5 and No. 8.Â
Sophomore Caroline Crumrine (+12), who is playing as an individual, posted an 84 with a birdie on No. 16.
No. 28 Illinois (+4) and 34th-ranked Clemson (+4) are tied for the team lead after Friday's opening round. Florida (+6) is two strokes back in third, followed by the Paladins (+7) in fourth place. Three teams are tied for fifth place, including No. 18 LSU (+9), 26th-ranked Kentucky (+9), and UNC Wilmington (+9).Â
The Paladins will tee off of No. 10 beginning at 10:03 a.m. in Saturday's second round and will play in a group with LSU and Kentucky. Admission to the tournament is free, and fans are welcome. Live tournament scoring will be available via http://www.golfstat.com.
