Greenville, S.C. – Sammy Fisher and Hannah McCarthy each scored four goals to lead the Elon Phoenix to a 21-9 victory over the Furman women's lacrosse team in its home opener, Saturday afternoon at Paladin Stadium.
Furman falls to 0-2 on the season while Elon improves to 2-4 overall.
Meagan Beal and
Anna Roser scored a team high three goals for the Paladins while
Paige Harman contributed two assists and one goal. Beal added three ground balls, three caused turnovers and one draw and Roser registered her first career hat trick.
Lauren Farber won a career best five draws to go with two ground balls and one goal.
Hannah Dintino scored once and
Ryan Bionda added an assist.
In goal,
Lily Rathbun set new career highs with 13 saves and six ground balls.
Fisher tallied four goals and three draws for the Phoenix and McCarthy finished with five points on four goals and one assist. Gillian Curran provided six ground balls, six draws, three caused turnovers, one goal and one assist. Margaret Stephan and Cierra Hopson both scored hat tricks. Kaitlyn Michaud tied Curran with three caused turnovers.
Chloe Herghelegiu concluded the game with eight saves in goal and three ground balls.
Elon outscored Furman 11-3 in the second half highlighted by seven consecutive goals, including four on free position attempts, to secure the 12-goal victory. The Paladins had cut their deficit down to 14-8 early in the fourth quarter when Beal scored her second goal of the contest with 12:03 remaining. The Phoenix's 7-0 run covered over 11 minutes until Beal's goal with 43 seconds left put the final score at 21-9.
Elon scored the game's first two goals before Furman came back with a 3-1 run, with goals coming from Roser, Harman and Dintino, to tie the score 3-3 at the 1:17 mark of the first quarter. The Phoenix got a late goal from Curran to lead 4-3 after the opening period.
Elon had built its lead out to 6-4 early in the second quarter when Roser's second goal put the score at 6-5 with 8:19 to go. The Phoenix closed out the first half on a 4-1 run to lead 10-6 at intermission. Farber's free position goal with 1:25 remaining had trimmed Elon's advantage to 8-6 before collecting the final two goals of the second quarter.
The Paladins forced the Phoenix into 13 turnovers during the contest while registering 17 ground balls and 14 draws.
Furman remains at home on Tuesday, March 15 to host Virginia Tech at 6 p.m.
