NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- Sophia Burnett (-2) fired an opening-round 70 and is even through 12 holes of round two to pace the 45th-ranked Furman (+15) women's golf team to a two-stroke lead Sunday in the opening day of the 2022 Southern Conference Women's Golf Championship at the par-72, 6,004 yard Barefoot Landing Resort's Dye Golf Course in North Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Due to predicted inclement weather for Monday in the North Myrtle Beach area, the second round began on Sunday afternoon at 2:04 p.m. All of the Paladin players except junior Anna Morgan completed 12 holes of the second round. Play will not begin before 9 a.m. on Monday. Check @FurmanWGolf for additional updates.Â
Burnett, a sophomore from Bluffton, S.C., birdied No. 8 in round one to turn at even par, then she added three birdies on the back nine, including consecutive birdies on No. 11 and No. 12 to take the individual lead at the end of the first round. In round two, she birdied three of four holes from No. 7 through No. 10 and holds a two-stroke lead over Mercer's Kate Song (E).
Junior Anna Morgan (+3) is tied for sixth through nine holes of the second round. She posted a 1-under 71 with birdies on No. 5 and No. 16 in round one and is 4-over with birdies on No. 8 and No. 9 to begin the second round.
Senior Sarah-Eve Rhéaume (+5) enters Monday's play tied for ninth. She carded a 75 with four birdies, including back to back birdies on No. 15 and No. 16, in the opening round and is 2-over with birdies on No. 8 and No. 12 in round two. Â
Freshman Savannah Hylton (+9) is tied for 21st after tallying a 77 with consecutive birdies on No. 11 and No. 12 and an additional birdie on No. 5 in round one. She is 4-over with three birdies in round two. Senior Kyra Cox (+15) is tied for 32nd after scoring an 83 in the first round. She sits at 4-over with a birdie on No. 12.
Furman, which is seeking its 19th SoCon title, posted a 293 to gain a share of the lead at the end of round one. The Paladins hold a two-stroke lead over Mercer (+17) mid-way through round two. Wofford (+21) is in third place, followed by defending champion East Tennessee State (+29) in fourth place.Â
The winner of the SoCon Championship will earn the league's automatic bid to the NCAA regionals, and the individual winner will also earn a regional berth. The NCAA field will be announced live on the Golf Channel on Wednesday, April 27.
