Furman Sweeps Western Carolina with 6-3 Win on Sunday

Tufts Throws Complete Game, Bartlett Records Three RBI

Greenville, S.C. – Emily Bartlett drove in three runs and Sierra Tufts threw a complete game on Sunday afternoon to lead the Furman softball team to a 6-3 victory over the Western Carolina Catamounts at Pepsi Stadium, completing a three-game Southern Conference sweep.

With the win, Furman improves to 18-26 on the season and 6-6 in conference play. Western Carolina drops to 18-29 overall and 4-11 in the SoCon.

The Catamounts struck for a run in the top of the first before the Paladins responded with four in their half of the frame to take a 4-1 lead. Bartlett, who finished 2-for-2 with three RBI in the contest, started the scoring with a two RBI single to right center field and was followed by Hana Suniga's two RBI double to left center field three batters later.

Tufts kept Western Carolina off the board in the second and third innings before the Catamounts plated two in the top of the fourth on Bethany Dobias' two RBI double and cut Furman's lead down to 4-3.

The Paladins closed out the game scoring a run each in the fifth and sixth innings to secure the 6-3 victory. Bartlett drove in her third run of the game in the bottom of the fifth on a bunt single and Ashlee Lykins provided an RBI triple to center field in the sixth.

Tufts (8-13) allowed just one earned run during her complete game performance and held Western Carolina to just four hits while walking three and striking out two.

Savannah Rice (10-13) suffered the loss after pitching 5.1 innings and surrendered six runs (three earned) on seven hits, three walks and three strikeouts.

Bartlett and Lykins both led Furman with two hits while Suniga, Caitlin Goldwait and Alex Rose Molinar each had one. Lykins recorded her team leading 12th multi-hit game this season and Bartlett drove in three runs for the second time.

Dobias posted two hits and two RBI for the Catamounts.

The Paladins close out the non-conference portion of their schedule on Wednesday, April 27 traveling to Athens, Ga. for a 6 p.m. first pitch against 14th-ranked Georgia. The game is being streamed via paid subscription on SEC Network +.
