SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Furman's Anna Morgan (-1) is in the clubhouse in a tie fourth during Saturday's second round of the 2022 NCAA Championship, which is being contested this weekend at the par-72, 6,383 yard Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Morgan, a junior from Spartanburg, S.C., entered the day tied for sixth after carding an even 72 on Friday. She tallied four birdies on the front nine from No. 4 through No. 9, with consecutive birdies on No. 6 and No. 7, to turn at 3-under. Morgan added a fifth birdie on No. 17 and finished the round with a 1-under 71. She is five strokes back of Stanford's Rose Zhang (-6) who leads the field by four strokes with a two-round total of 68-70=138.
"Anna has really played well the last couple of days," said Furman head coach Jeff Hull. "This is obviously a tough golf course, and she has done a great job with course management and taking advantage when opportunities presented themselves. Having not been here before, I think her confidence is growing each day, and I look forward to watching her the final two rounds."
On Sunday, Morgan will tee off on No. 1 at 8:20 a.m. PT (11:20 a.m. ET) and will play in a group with individuals Chiara Tamburlini of Ole Miss and Old Dominion's Jana Melichova.
The 2022 SoCon Player of the Year, Morgan qualified for the national championship after firing a final-round 67, the sixth-best women's collegiate round at Karsten Creek, to finish fifth at the NCAA Stillwater Regional and advance in the top individual spot at the regional. A two-time All-SoCon selection, she ranks 29th nationally after leading the league with a 72.19 stroke average over 32 rounds entering this weekend's championship.
A field of 24-teams and 12 individuals is playing 54 holes of stroke play, which will conclude on Sunday. The top 15 teams and nine individuals not on an advancing team will then play one additional round of stroke play on Monday. An individual champion will be crowned after 72 holes of competition.Â
Top-ranked Stanford (+5) holds a four-stroke lead over No. 2 Oregon (+9). No. 17 Auburn (+10) is in third place, while 15th-ranked UCLA (+10) is tied for third with two holes to play.
