Boiling Springs, N.C. – Senior
Callum Holland and freshman
Slade Starnes each netted a goal and added an assist as Furman remained unbeaten on the season with a 2-1 victory versus Gardner-Webb in non-conference men's soccer action at Harbison-Greene Stadium in Boiling Springs, N.C., Friday evening.
Holland, a native of Surrey, England, helped the Paladins grab the early lead on a free kick in the 17
th minute. The midfielder curled his set piece from the left wing into the center of the box. It took a deflection before Starnes, a Dallas, Texas, product, flicked a header past Gardner-Webb's Lorenzo Bartoloni for the first goal of the match at 16:12.
The Runnin' Bulldogs equalized with their only score of the match at the 30:45 mark. Aymane Sordo touched a through ball into the path of Owen Zaldivar who ran onto the ball and chipped a shot over Furman goalkeeper
Ben Roberts to knot the contest at 1-1.
Furman wasted little time regaining the lead in the 33
rd minute. Starnes fed a pass to Holland down the left wing and the captain entered the box and cut back inside his defender before slotting his shot into the right-hand corner at 32:18.
In the second half, the Paladins leaned heavily on their defense to secure the win. Gardner-Webb posted an 11-0 edge in total shots over the final 45 minutes, but Roberts made a pair of diving stops off deflections and Starnes made a sliding clearance to thwart the attack. Roberts finished with two stops to earn the victory, while Bartoloni suffered the loss for Gardner-Webb.
The Runnin-Bulldogs (1-2-0) outshot Furman, 17-7, but managed only a 3-2 advantage in shots on goal.
Furman (2-0-1) opens a four-match homestand on Tuesday when it hosts North Greenville. Kickoff on Seagraves Field at Stone Soccer Stadium is set for 7 p.m.
