Greenville, S.C. – Junior
Jake Raine tallied his first goal of the season in the 67
th minute to help Furman to a 1-0 victory over North Greenville in non-conference men's soccer action Tuesday evening on Seagraves Field at Stone Stadium.
"It's always good to get the shutout," said Paladin head coach
Doug Allison, following Furman's third victory in its first four matches. "Credit to Coach Aulick. He has done a terrific job with North Greenville's program. That's a very good team we played tonight. Our substitutes gave us a big lift in the second half and were a big part of why we were able to get the lead and secure the win."
After a scoreless first half, both teams had opportunities to take the lead in the early moments of the second half. In the 51
st minute, Furman's
Dylan Lane drilled a low shot from the center of the six-yard box that was turned away by NGU goalkeeper Michel Weber. Just over two minutes later, Reda Ikarrain of North Greenville played Yessine Bessaies behind the Paladin defense, but his shot past a charging
Ben Roberts banged off the crossbar.
Furman (3-0-1) finally broke the deadlock in the 67
th minute.
Tommy Redhead unleashed a long range shot that Weber could only redirect off the short-hop and Raine tapped home the rebound from the left side of the box at the 66:32 mark.
North Greenville (2-2-0) produced a chance to equalize with less than 13 minutes remaining when Sebastian Duenas' header caromed off the undersize of the crossbar and Roberts smothered the Crusaders' follow-up effort at the far post. Roberts finished with three saves to notch his second shutout of the season, while Weber recorded seven saves for NGU.
The Paladins compiled a 13-11 edge in total shots and an 8-3 advantage in shots on goal, including three from midfielder
Dylan Lane.
Furman continues its four-match homestand Saturday evening when it hosts Presbyterian. Kickoff at Stone Stadium is set for 7 p.m. and the match will be streamed on ESPN+.
