Men's Soccer Falls To Coastal Carolina, 3-1

Paladins Open SoCon Play On Saturday At UNCG

Greenville, S.C. – Marcello Jones, Noe Santos and Alvaro Garcia-Pascual netted goals to lead Coastal Carolina to a 3-1 victory over Furman in non-conference men's soccer action Sunday afternoon on Seagraves Field at Stone Stadium.

Tied at 1-1 in the 30th minute, Santos headed in a Danny Cabrera cross from the edge of the box to give the Chanticleers a 2-1 lead. Furman created several dangerous chances, but Coastal Carolina doubled the lead at the 66:19 mark when Garcia-Pascual scored his scored his sixth goal of the season off an assist by Dimitris Moraitakis.

"It was a tough loss today against a good Coastal side," said Paladin head coach Doug Allison. "Hopefully we are prepared now to go into Southern Conference play. That's why we play early season matches against teams like this."

The Chanticleers (3-3-2) grabbed the early lead at 21:24 when Jones' shot was saved by the Paladins' Cameron Maung-Maung following a give-and-go at the top of the box. Jones pounced on the rebound and deposited his shot into the open net for his second goal of the season.

Furman leveled the match at 24:50. Coastal's Mamudou Keita was whistled for a handball at the edge of the box and the Paladins' Tommy Redhead converted from the penalty spot for his second score of the campaign.

The Paladins managed a 17-16 edge in total shots, but Coastal finished with a 9-8 advantage in shots on goal. Randy Burkhardt stopped seven shots for the Chanticleers to earn the victory in goal, while Maung-Maung, making his first start of the season, posted six saves.

Furman (5-2-1) returns to action next Saturday night when it opens SoCon play at UNC Greensboro.
