WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Furman sophomore Will Morlan (-10) recorded his third-straight round in the 60s to finish as co-champion Tuesday at the Old Town Collegiate, which was hosted by Wake Forest at the par 70, 6,966 yard Old Town Club in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Morlan, a native of Alpharetta, Ga., tied the second-lowest individual round in Paladin history with a 63 in round two on Monday and entered Tuesday's play tied for first. He birdied two of his first four holes in the final round and finished the day with a 1-under 69, tying for the victory with Xavier Marcoux (-1) of Rutgers, who fired a 65 in round three.Â
"Coming into this week, I knew it was going to take three really solid rounds to get the job done," said Morlan after his round. "Fortunately, I kept my confidence high and just trusted my game. I had a ton of support from my family, team, coaches, and friends back on campus and could not have done this without their encouragement!"
Morlan opened the 2022-23 season with a third-place finish at the Gopher Invitational in Independence, Minn., earlier this month. He has scored under par in all six rounds this season, with five rounds in the 60s and a 67.5 scoring average over the six rounds.Â
"It has been a lot of fun to watching Will come into his own the last two events," said Furman head coach Matt Davidson. "He is such a talented golfer who works hard and is getting better every year. I couldn't be more proud of the way he handled the pressure of being in contention two events in a row and getting the job done this week."
The Paladins (-9) finished third in the event with four players at or under par on Tuesday. Three Furman players placed among the top 25, including senior Sam Lape (-4), who tied for seventh after carding an even 70 with three birdies on Tuesday. Senior Ross Funderburke (E) eagled the par-5 No. 4 and added birdies on No. 3 and No. 7, finishing the day with a 69 and tying for 24th. Â
Senior Walker Crosby (+5) posted a team-high four birdies, including three on the front nine, to tie for 39th with a final-round 70, and senior Reynolds Lambert (+6) tied for 42nd after posting a 71 with three birdies on Tuesday.
Kansas State (-12) won the tournament by one stroke over host Wake Forest (-11). Furman (-9) was third, two strokes ahead of Penn State (-7), and four strokes ahead of Rutgers (-5). Â
The Paladins tied for the lead with a 4.01 scoring average on the par 4s and tied for second with a 3.13 stroke average on the par 3s. Furman was second with 181 pars and tied for fourth with 46 birdies over the 54-hole event.Â
Furman will compete at the Trinity Forest Invitational, which will be hosted by SMU in Dallas, Texas, Oct. 2-4.
