Greenville, S.C. – Furman's defense limited Wofford to just three shots on goal and senior
Nora Sampson recorded three saves as the Paladins and Terriers played to a 0-0 draw in Southern Conference women's soccer action Thursday evening at Snyder Field in Spartanburg, S.C.
With its fourth shutout in its last five matches, Furman moved to 7-4-1 overall and remained unbeaten in league play at 2-0-1. The Terriers moved to 6-4-2 overall and 1-1-1 in the SoCon.
"It's always great to get a shutout, especially on the road," said Paladin head coach
Andrew Burr. "For us to start conference play with three consecutive road trips and to come away with two wins and a draw is a solid start. We're looking forward to finally playing in front of the home crowd next Thursday."
The Paladins fired four shots on goal over the opening 45 minutes, including a pair of shots on target from redshirt-sophomore
Hannah Farr. Wofford forced Sampson into just one save in the first half as the Paladins fashioned an 8-5 edge in total shots and 5-1 margin in shots on goal.
Both Sampson and Wofford's Caroline Doss, who finished with nine stops, registered two saves in the first 20 minutes after the restart before Furman freshman
Stella Garcia rattled the crossbar with a 67
th minute strike. The Paladins did not allow the Terriers a shot on goal after the 65
th minute, but Doss denied goal-bound efforts from Farr and
Helen Gutierrez in the final 12 minutes to preserve the tie.
Furman outshot the Terriers 20-7 and finished with a 9-3 margin in shots on goal.
The Paladins open their SoCon home schedule when they host The Citadel in the Furman Soccer Cancer Awareness Match on Thursday, October 6. Kickoff at Stone Stadium is slated for 7 p.m.
