Maddie Massie netted the equalizer in the 60
th minute to help Furman earn a 1-1 draw versus Wofford in the regular season finale for both teams Sunday afternoon at Snyder Field in Spartanburg, S.C.
With the tie, the Paladins concluded the regular season at 7-4-6 overall and 3-1-5 in league play. Furman earned the No. 4 seed in the Southern Conference Women's Soccer Championship and will face No. 5 seed UNC Greensboro in the quarterfinal round on Friday, October 27, at the Catamount Soccer Complex in Cullowhee, N.C. Wofford, 4-10-4 overall and 2-5-2 in SoCon play, will be the No. 8 seed and will host No. 9 VMI in the opening round of the tournament on Tuesday at Snyder Field.
"We needed to get a result today to make sure we got a top-four seed in the tournament and we showed a lot of determination in rallying from behind to get the draw," said Paladin head coach
Andrew Burr. "A brand new season begins for us on Friday and we look forward to the opportunity to compete for a championship."
Furman threatened to score with a pair of shots on goal in the opening minutes, but it was Wofford breaking the deadlock in the 36
th minute. After a Terrier shot off the cross bar and a scramble in the box, Ashley Grant punch a shot into an open net at 35:14 to put Wofford in front.
Just before the hour mark,
Valentina Mosquera made a run through the midfielder and slid a pass into Massie to setup a one-versus-one breakaway with the goalkeeper. Massie fired a left-footed shot past Wofford goalkeeper Caroline Doss at 59:41 to even the match.
The Paladins created the majority of the chances down the stretch, but Doss and Furman's
Addison Corn each stopped four shots to preserve the tie.
Furman posted a 14-12 advantage in total shots while both teams registered five shots on goal. Coach Burr's squad earned 10 corner kicks and surrendered just one to the Terriers.
