SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Furman's Dylan Schubert won the men's individual title and the Paladin women placed second Friday at the 2023 NCAA Southeast Region Championship at the Milliken Research Park in Spartanburg, S.C.
For their efforts, both Schubert and the Furman women earned automatic bids to the NCAA Championships, will be held on Saturday, Nov. 18, in Charlottesville, Va. The women's 6K will begin at 10:20 a.m., with the men's 10K to follow at 11:10 a.m.
A senior from Loveland, Colo., Schubert posted a personal-best time of 28:51.2 to win the 10K race, setting a new course record and becoming the first individual region champion in the history of the Furman cross country program.
In the opening race of the day, the 25th-ranked Furman women scored 82 points to finish second, grabbing one of the region's two automatic bids on the women's side. No. 2 N.C. State won the meet with 52 points to claim the other automatic bid, while tenth-ranked Virginia finished third after recording 123 point.
Junior Kaylie Armitage finished 13th and paced the Paladins with a time of 20:08.8 on the 6K course, while senior Abigail Robertson, sophomore Carly Wilkes, and junior Sierra Bower finished 15-16-17 to seal the victory. Robertson posted a time of 20:17.2, followed by Wilkes at 20:17.4, and Bower with a PR of 20:17.6. Sophomore Jenna Mulhern completed the Furman scorers in 21st place with a personal-best time of 20:20.4. Sophomore Emma Jones finished 49th with a PR 20:58.3, and senior Nicole Matysik was 72nd with a time of 21:20.6.
On the men's side, 14th-ranked Furman finished eighth with 252 points. North Carolina won the regional with 38 points, and Eastern Kentucky took second place with 72 points to earn the region's two automatic team bids.
Behind Schubert's victory, senior Carson Williams finished 13th with a PR of 29:27.6, and senior David Ahlmeyer turned in a time of 30:26.4 for 61st place. Junior Nick Goldstein placed 69th after crossing the line with a personal-best time of 30:46.0, and sophomore Luke Taylor was the final Paladin scorer in 108th place with a PR of 31:28.7. Junior Matthew Smith posted a personal-best of 31:49.0 for 125th place, and senior Cameron Ponder finished in 42:57.0 for 228th place.
