Furman Drops Home Contest to Coastal Carolina, 78-72

Ryan Scores Game High 17 Points; Session Adds First Double-Double of Season

Greenville, S.C. – Arin Freeman scored a team high 15 points to lead five Chanticleers in double figures Saturday afternoon as Coastal Carolina held off Furman, 78-72, in non-conference women's basketball action from Timmons Arena.

Furman drops to 2-2 overall while the win evens the Chanticleers record at 2-2 on the season.

The Paladins had four players finish with 10 or more points led by Sydney Ryan's game high 17. Kate Johnson made all six of her field goal attempts for a career high 16 points while Niveya Henley contributed 15. Jada Session recorded her first double-double of the season on 15 points and 10 rebounds while adding a team high four steals.

Freeman's 15 points paced Coastal Carolina offensively with Makaila Cange pouring in 13 and Tiara Abron 11. Deaja Richardson and Dalanna Carter both had 10 points.

The Chanticleers outscored Furman 28-17 in the second quarter and held a 39-33 lead at halftime. The Paladins led 16-11 after the first quarter but Coastal Carolina connected on 11-of-18 field goals in the second, including 3-of-4 from three, with eight different players recording a basket.

Henley scored 10 of her 15 points in the third quarter on 4-of-5 shooting, and made both of her triples, to help Furman cut its 12-point deficit down to six, 50-44, with 3:17 remaining in the period.

The Chanticleers would build their lead out to a game high 14 points, 66-52, at the 5:40 mark of the fourth quarter to cap a 10-2 run. The Paladins responded by outscoring Coastal Carolina 14-5 over the next 4:39 and trailed 71-66 with 1:01 to go following a pair of Evie DePetro free throws. Ryan scored four straight points to cut Furman's deficit down to 76-72 with 12 seconds remaining.

The Chanticleers closed out the game at the free throw line after making two with nine seconds left to put the final score at 78-72.

The Paladins concluded the game shooting 42.6 percent (26-of-61) from the field and held a 43-38 advantage in rebounds.

Furman is back at Timmons Arena on Monday to host Southern Wesleyan at 7 p.m.
