Furman Drops Season Opener at Clemson

Paladins-Tigers Were Meeting for First Time in Program History

Clemson, S.C. – The Furman women's lacrosse team opened its 2023 season on Wednesday afternoon dropping a 19-3 decision to the Clemson Tigers at Historic Riggs Field.

Furman falls to 0-1 on the season while Clemson improves to 2-0 overall.

The Tigers scored the game's first 16 goals, including 11 in the first quarter, and held a 14-0 lead at halftime. Clemson received goals from 11 different players including a game high four by Hanna Hilcoff. Sofia Chepnik contributed three goals.

Hilcoff also led all players with four ground balls and won six draws along with Ella Little. Gianna New caused two turnovers. In goal, Krissy Kowalski and Emily Lamparter combined for eight saves.

Anna Roser and Hannah Dintino got the Paladins on the board with back-to-back goals in the second half. Roser's goal came with 6:19 left in the third quarter while Dintino netted her goal at the 13:54 mark in the fourth off Reynolds Hester's assist. Meagan Beal provided Furman's third goal with 6:13 remaining in the contest.

Katelyn Sousa and Libby Bowen each led the Paladins with three ground balls apiece. Dintino won a team best two draws. In goal, Lily Rathbun registered seven saves and caused a team-leading three turnovers.

Furman matched the Tigers in the contest with 12 caused turnovers. The Paladins recorded 14 shots with 11 going on goal.

Furman is back in action on Tuesday, February 28 when it travels to Gainesville, Fla. for a 12 p.m. matchup with preseason 7th-ranked Florida.
