Sierra Tufts tossed a complete game and surrendered just one run as Furman clipped Bellarmine, 5-1, in the finale of the Furman Softball Invitational on Sunday afternoon at Pepsi Stadium.
Tufts (2-2) scattered four hits and fanned three to pick up the win while each of the top four hitters in the Paladin order drove in a run. Furman improved to 3-4 on the season and the Knights dropped to 1-8.
After Olivia Bricker's RBI single single put the Knights in the top of the third inning, Furman answered with three in the bottom of the frame.
Caitlin Goldwait reached on a two-out single and swiped second base before scoring on
Ashlee Lykins base hit. Ainsey Yoshizumi followed with a triple inside the first base bag to drive in Lykins before
Riley Ludlam laced a double into the gap to score Yoshizumi.
Hana Hashioka was hit by a pitch to open the fourth inning, stole second, and raced home on
Sylvia Burroughs double to left-center. The next inning, Yoshizumi reached base on an error, stole second, and scored on an RBI single off the bat of
Kiley Perry.
Starter Carson Goatley (0-3) took the loss for Bellarmine allowing four runs on five hits over four innings.
Furman returns to action on Tuesday when it travels to Boiling Springs, N.C., for a 3 p.m. doubleheader versus Gardner-Webb.
